Lemongrass and tea tree soap review

Saturday Soapmaking: Tea Tree Lemongrass Avocado

Our friend Carla had been wanting us to have another soapmaking lesson at our house so we got together Saturday with our friend Teresa and a new friend Donna and made two soaps: Tea Tree Lemongrass Avocado and Peppermint Honey Oatmeal. Dave posted on his blog the recipe for the Peppermint Honey Oatmeal here.

Tea Tree Lemongrass Avocado Soap

Carla taking notes when she wasn’t soaping.

Donna and Dave were working on the lye water

You will notice in the above picture that we have the kitchen window open. We do that when we are adding the lye even when it’s cold outside.

Teresa did a great job stirring the oils

Donna mixes while watching the new soap come to trace.

Here is the recipe for this soap. I’ll post the other later.

Tea Tree Lemongrass Avocado Soap [print_link]

Olive Oil – 30% – 270 grams

Coconut Oil – 30% – 270 grams

Palm Oil – 25% – 225 grams

Avocado Oil – 5% – 45 grams

Avocado Butter – 5% – 45 grams

Castor Oil – 5% – 45 grams

Frozen Goat’s Milk – 342 grams

Lye – 128 grams

The following were added at trace:

  • 1 tablespoon each of Tea Tree EO and Lemongrass EO
  • 1/2 teaspoon Rosemary EO
  • 1.5 teaspoon finely ground dried Lemongrass
  • 2 tablespoons Avocado oil

This makes 2 lbs of soap or 10 bars. As with any recipe you get off of the Internet, please run this through one of the calculators. This one is our favorite.

Please refer to the cold process instructions here .

After the soap was poured and put downstairs to wait 24 hours to cut, and cleaning up the kitchen (thank you Donna), we all sat down to Carla’s Coconut Cream pie. Yum! What a way to end a soapmaking afternoon!

I can’t wait to make soap in a few weeks! At the moment I have Audubon Bee School, bee books to read, equipment to gather and hives to paint, kids to visit. My time is eaten up with Fun!

On top of that I got rear-ended Wednesday-so a lot of time on the phone with insurance companies and repair shops–not Fun.

Soap making is high on my list and I feel confident I can do it!
Thanks to both of you. See you Saturday!

Kathy, Thanks for the heads up! I’ll check it out.

Denny, It smells great. This was one of Dave’s concoctions.

Looks like a good time and good soap was had by all. I really need to make some soap too…I want to have some done by mid-April. Better get cracking…or soaping. 🙂
